Laura Baynes PhysioPilates

Physiotherapist-led Pilates classes in Norfolk, UK

Welcome.  Laura is a Chartered Physiotherapist & Certified Pilates Instructor living and working in Norfolk. She has been practising physiotherapy since 2005 and teaching Pilates classes since 2007. Laura trained with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. Laura continues to work clinically as a physiotherapist with a special interest in pelvic health and menopause.

Laura is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute, and an affiliate member of Pelvic, Obstetric and Gynaecological Physiotherapy (POGP).

Laura resides in Norfolk with her husband and three children. Pilates has also been fundamental during Laura’s pregnancies; in preparing her body for the birth of her eldest in 2019 and her twins in 2021; and to the restoration of the core and pelvic floor function in her post-natal body. Laura has also found very beneficial carryover from Pilates in the management of her scoliosis (spinal curvature). Outside of work, Laura enjoys running, swimming and dog walks with her family.

Pilates

Mindfully stretch, strengthen and balance your body

Laura teaches matwork Pilates which takes place on a mat and consists of precise, controlled, flowing movements coordinated with breathing. It is named after Joseph Pilates, who developed this body conditioning exercise for “…the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind and the ability to perform life’s daily activities with zest and ease’”. (Joseph Pilates)

Laura teaches classes of no more than 10 attendees. The classes are varied and progressive. They include the use of small equipment (such as balance pads, resistance bands, weighted balls & foam rollers) and regular technique checks.

Being a musculoskeletal physiotherapist, Laura uses her sound knowledge of the (patho)physiology and (patho)mechanics of the body to ensure that attendees are exercising to suit and benefit their individual body. Laura welcomes those with osteopenia and osteoporosis in her classes, to exercise with confidence and reap the benefits of Pilates with tailored participation. Pilates can form a valuable part of the lifestyle management of perimenopause and menopause.

“Change happens through movement and movement heals” (Joseph Pilates)

The classes are made up of a standing start- optimising alignment and tuning into the breath & pelvic floor as well as challenging one’s balance, nourishing bone health and strengthening in functional positions. This is followed by exercises on the mat in various positions, with a focus on correct set up for effective form, and a mindfulness-based meditation to close.

It is recommended that adults perform at least 2 strength sessions per week and older adults work on balance twice per week (UK CMO, 2020).
